Read More Fibrosis
Liver fibrosis is associated with increased liver scarring due to liver damage or disease. All chronic liver diseases can lead to liver fibrosis which can subsequently cause cirrhosis or liver cancer. Liver fibrosis may progress unnoticed until it advances to liver cirrhosis.
The disease is associated with the accumulation of extracellular matrix proteins which increase liver scarring. The scarring process is irreversible, thus the liver cells cannot regenerate after liver fibrosis.
Liver fibrosis could become life threatening if it is not diagnosed and treated. Liver disease is the 12th most common cause of death in the U.S. and the 4th leading cause of death between the ages of 45 and 54 (CDC).
Fibrosis can be caused by anything that damages the liver. When the liver is repeatedly
damaged, the chances of scar tissue developing increases.
The main cause of liver fibrosis is chronic liver diseases such as hepatitis viruses, alcoholic and
non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Liver fibrosis may be asymptomatic or only cause mild symptoms.
Ultrasound examination: A non-invasive and painless method of diagnostics. It explicitly shows changes in liver structure and the disease’s progression.
Blood test: Through a blood sample, a doctor can detect increased liver enzymes and collagen IV, which are typical indicators of fibrosis.
Liver biopsy: The most precise diagnostic procedure. Through liver tissue samples, the exact stage of fibrosis can be determined.
The choice of therapy depends on the underlying disease which caused liver fibrosis. The liver will not recover from advanced stages of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. At this point, only the disease’s symptoms can be treated. For some patients, a liver transplant may be considered.
Chances for recovery depend on the underlying disease. The typical complication caused by liver fibrosis is liver cirrhosis. As a rule, liver fibrosis is irreversible. Ideally, therapeutic interventions should begin at the stage of fatty liver disease, prior to the development of liver fibrosis.
Eating well, exercising, and making healthy lifestyle choices dramatically decreases your chance of developing fibrosis. Improve your health by following these lifestyle tips!
