A study conducted in the United States showed that people whose parent, sibling, or child was diagnosed with liver cancer, were almost four times more at risk of developing liver cancer than individuals without such a family history.
Why this is important to know: HBV (hepatitis B virus) can be transmitted from an infected mother to a child during birth. According to the CDC, around 40% of infants born to an HBV-infected mother will develop chronic infection, if not properly treated. Untreated chronic HBV infection can lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer. In most newly infected people, HBV infection develops asymptomatically which makes it harder to detect at an early stage.
