What vitamins does your body need more of in the fall?

Vitamin D

Over 40% of Americans have vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is responsible for calcium and phosphate metabolism and is essential for bone health, muscle strength, and the immune system in general.

Vitamin D deficiency is very common in patients with chronic liver disease. A study concluded that as many as 92% of examined liver disease patients have some level of vitamin D deficiency. It can be explained by the impaired absorption of vitamin D due to liver disease. Prolonged vitamin D deficiency in liver disease patients can exacerbate already existing complications from liver disease, for example, osteoporosis.

Best food sources of vitamin D:pink salmon, sardines, mackerel, and Amsety bars.

Zinc

The liver is responsible for the metabolism of zinc which can be impaired due to liver disease. Chronic liver disease is usually accompanied by lower zinc levels as the liver disease progresses, zinc concentration decreases as well. Zinc deficiency can weaken the liver function and the immune system response to liver inflammation, causing poor appetite and malnutrition.

Best food sources of zinc: seafood (oyster, crab, lobster), chicken, pumpkin seeds, cashews, and Amsety bars.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin with very strong antioxidant properties. One of the latest randomized clinical trials showed that vitamin C can “help promote liver function recovery and glucose homeostasis in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)”. Vitamin C can reduce the oxidative stress and remove excessive free radicals in patients with NAFLD.

Best food sources of vitamin C: citrus fruit (orange grapefruit, kiwifruit), red pepper, strawberries, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, potatoes, and Amsety bars.
